abstract The aim of this presentation is to introduce the XML Language. This presentation will describe Unicode, features of the XML language, Document Type Declaration (DTD), and concepts about namespaces.

bio Tomasz Janowski is a Research Fellow at UNU-IIST, Macao, on leave from the Department of Computer Science, University of Gdańsk, Poland. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Warwick, England, and an MSc in Mathematics from the University of Gdańsk, Poland. Tomasz Janowski is the author or co-author of over 30 publications in Computer Science, Software Engineering and applications in international conferences, journals and books. He has given over one hundred academic presentations. He has been the program committee member at 20 international conferences, and is the member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Networking and Virtual Organizations and the IFIP Working Group 5.5 - Cooperation Infrastructure for Virtual Enterprises and Electronics Business. Tomasz Janowski has the first-hand knowledge of the public sector - he is the manager and technical leader of the Macao e-Government Project, a foundational project for the development of Electronic Government in Macao. He has nine years of experience working for UN on various educational, research and networking projects with developing countries. Recently, he initiatiated the UNU-IIST's UNeGov.net initative - Building a Community of Practice for Electronic Governance. His current research interests include development of Electronic Governance, foundations of XML technology and rigorous development of enterprise software, particularly software for the public sector.
